Experience Level Progression

We are deviating from the XP progression in the Player’s Handbook because the DM feels it is too fast. The table presented here follows a simple mathematical formula. To gain a level, you need your current level x 1,000 XP. This is not something that will be up for debate, the DM wants a slightly slower progression. Typically you gain a level once per 3 game sessions. While I know the PHB was redesigned for getting through the lower levels quickly, I’m not a fan of that approach. I like the 3 game session approximation. However, since I sometimes run 2 or 3 sessions worth of encounters in a single day of gaming (you’d be surprised how many encounters can be finished in a 14 hour block of solid gaming in a day), sometimes you gain a level if you are around for an entire long session. The following chart shows the level and amount of XP needed for that level.

Level 1: 0 XP, everyone starts at 1st level, even npcs.
Level 2: 1,000 XP
Level 3: 3,000 XP
Level 4: 6,000 XP
Level 5: 10,000 XP
Level 6: 15,000 XP
Level 7: 21,000 XP
Level 8: 28,000 XP
Level 9: 36,000 XP
Level 10: 45,000 XP

I’m going to get this game to level 10 before deciding how far it will go, but if I decide to go further, this XP chart will be continued further.
