The communal living and chaotic environments these creatures are born and raised in leads to their social isolation. While humans often see these creatures as something to be feared, the ratfolk often try to lead lives of adventure that are far from boring.

Ratfolk Traits

Your ratfolk character gains the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 1 and your Intelligence score increases by 2, as ratfolk are agile and cunning creatures.

Age. Ratfolk age faster than humans, reaching adulthood around 12 years of age and living close to 60 years.

Alignment. Ratfolk tend to live in underground tightly packed communities. They are best suited to chaotic alignments due to their chaotic growth and development in those communities.

Size. Ratfolk stand roughly 4 feet in height and weigh close to 80 pounds on average.

Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.

Darkvision. Accustomed to lives underground, the eyesight of ratfolk is well adjusted to such living conditions. Ratfolk can see in dim light within 60 feet of them as if it were dim light, and in darkness as if it were dim light in the same radius. Ratfolk can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Senses. Ratfolk characters have proficiency in the Perception skill.

Rodent Empathy. Ratfolk have advantage on Wisdom (Animal Handling) skill checks made to influence rodents such as rats and mice.

Rodent Tinker. Ratfolk gain proficiency in one of the following artisan tool sets of your choice: alchemist’s supplies, leatherworker’s tools, or tinker’s tools.

Swarm Tactics. Ratfolk are adept at fighting communally and may share a space in combat with another creature of Small or larger size. When fighting in this manner, the ratfolk character’s attacks have advantage as if the foe were under the effects of flanking (another ally of the ratfolk on the opposite side of the target).

Languages. Ratfolk can speak, read, and write Common.
